March Ahead: Community Engagement & Improvement

Gary Israel
Ya’ll OK?? Brrr … what a cold February! I think we all need “I survived the Winter of ’26” T-shirts. This was the longest cold streak that I can recall in the 30 years I’ve lived in Lee County. I’ll try to remember these cold mornings this coming August and September!
You’re going to love this month’s warm-hearted cover story. In fact, you may even want to support this student-led community effort. I am speaking about a dynamic group at Estero High School, LEAD Estero, a student nonprofit organization that is creating opportunities for peers, fostering leadership skills, and raising funds for scholarships and educational programs in Southwest Florida.
I’m not going to divulge everything here, but the students involved with LEAD Estero gain first-hand experience in nonprofit management, event planning, fundraising and community engagement by taking on roles that mirror responsibilities of nonprofit boards. They strategize, plan events, canvass, manage partnerships and mobilize volunteers.
Breaking Par for Education, held annually at Grandezza, is their signature fundraising event. This dually themed fundraiser kicks off Saturday, March 21, with a golf outing, followed by a luau-themed gala on Sunday, March 22. Please consider attending! LEAD Estero stands as an inspiring example of what motivated young people can achieve when given a platform to lead! The group’s efforts are strengthening our community.
This month’s Village Connection explains a different effort to improve our community through better water quality. The Village is addressing groundwater well issues, septic tank issues and package wastewater treatment plant issues impacting the Estero River. I’m grateful to live in a community that responds to residents’ needs, especially when it comes to water quality, access and dependability.
Speaking of community improvements, have you taken the opportunity to check out the newly re-opened South County Regional Library? New design! New Layout! New Technology! All the improvements bring the 30-year-old library into the modern age. We know you will enjoy reading about the transformation, which includes something new to explore for all ages and interests.
Why not follow a library outing with dinner at this month’s featured restaurant, the award-winning Mastello Ristorante and Steakhouse — just a short drive into south Fort Myers. There you will find Old World Sicilian flavors and hospitality from brothers Vincenzo, Guiseppe and Pietro Cacciatore. Named one of the best steakhouses in Florida by USA Today Network and Diners’ Choice, Mastello offers a top selection of premium aged meats, an extensive raw bar menu and creatively crafted Italian and seafood dishes. The Southwest Florida dining community is wild about Mastello, and I’m sure you will find a favorite dish of your own. Mangia Bene!
In Happenings this month, check out Estero Fest, taking place at the Estero Community Park on Saturday, March 21, from 1-8 p.m. The fun-filled event includes a free kids’ zone and a business expo, sponsored by the Greater Estero Chamber of Commerce (1-5 p.m.). Live music throughout the day culminates with a Ben Allen Band concert in the early evening. There will be food and dessert trucks along with a beer garden tent (check out details on page 12). Come on out and have a great time with others from our wonderful community!
Until next month, remember to…
Enjoy the Good Life: Estero Life!!!
