Happy 250th Birthday, America!

Gary Israel
I must admit that I am a very patriotic American! As I have said many times before, after Easter and Christmas, the Fourth of July is my favorite holiday. I just love patriotic music, shows and programs, especially those that honor our veterans and the major events in our history. I am especially excited about all of the programing planned before and after July 4, 2026.
Not that our nation hasn’t had its challenges from time to time, but there certainly have been far more positives than negatives. More people from around the world want to come to America than to any other place. I believe it is still the greatest country in the world! Maybe that is why I am so proud to perform our National Anthem at every opportunity, making sure it is done correctly and with honor and dignity.
Are you old enough to remember America’s bicentennial 50 years ago? I sure do! I can still see the dozens of “tall ships” sailing into New York harbor and all the excitement. I am sure this year’s celebration will be the most spectacular ever!
So that everyone can get the most out of our country’s 250th birthday, we have compiled a listing of events happening in and around our community on Independence Day. I hope that each of you takes advantage of the opportunities to celebrate and enjoy as much as possible.
While 250 years seems like a long time, from an historical perspective, America is young. Estero Bay and Mound Key were settled by the Spanish more than 460 years ago and became the capital of the indigenous Calusa Indians. The first modern settlers began in 1882 when Gustave Damkohler planted a citrus farm along the Estero River.
That brings us to our cover story on the Alvarez-Smith house on Highlands Ave, built in 1919. The Village of Estero is working with the Estero Historical Society to move this historic home over to the Estero Community Park to be joined with two other historical buildings, the cottage and school. Together, they represent the simple beginnings of our community. Be prepared to learn and appreciate the history surrounding the formation of Estero.
The Village will soon open another public park, the Estero RiverPark, within 62 acres the Village acquired at the corner of U.S. 41 and Corkscrew Road. The first phase of the project has been completed, protecting environmentally sensitive land, celebrating Estero’s history and providing natural recreation for residents and visitors. Read this month’s Village Connection to learn about what natural beauty lies in this land, inviting exploration.
This month’s dining adventure will take you above the tree line in North Naples, to the rooftop experience, Tigress Cantonese Chophouse on the seventh floor of the Perry Hotel Naples. The drinks are creative, the food is amazing, and the view is spectacular! We know everyone will enjoy this unique venue and dining experience.
However you may choose to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday, please take all precautions to have a safe and Happy Fourth of July!
Until next month, remember to…
Enjoy the Good Life: Estero Life!!!
