Dr. Ben Carson is a former US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and neurosurgeon who performed the first successful separation of occipital craniopagus conjoined twins. Carson also refined a technique known as hemispherectomy, in which one-half of the brain is removed to prevent seizures in persons with severe epilepsy. Dr. Carson was a candidate in the 2015 presidential primaries before accepting the position as the 17th United States Secretary of HUD where his team was responsible for many innovative programs such as the Foster Youth to Independence program (FYI) which helps youth who have aged out of foster care obtain the support necessary to set them on a trajectory of success. His story of overcoming obstacles is certain to inspire.
