Advancing the Story, Chapter by Chapter

Gary Israel
In a good book, each chapter builds upon the next, the plot getting richer as the story advances.
The “next chapter” in college athletics at Florida Gulf Coast University begins as Colin Hargis becomes the new athletic director, just the third in FGCU’s 27-year history. In this month’s cover story, we explore the experience, expertise and mindset that Hargis carries into his new role.
His goals include generating resources to support FGCU’s student athletes, growing the Eagles athletic booster club, and improving the fan experience to attract younger families, like his own. We wish Colin a long and successful career at FGCU as he helps the school’s athletic programs advance their already inspiring story of success. #Go Eagles!
Estero resident Richard Sherman knows something about good storytelling. His new book, “Never Home,” revisits former chapters in America’s history while honoring our nation’s fallen heroes. His poignant photography of military cemeteries abroad, and short biographies of those interred therein, aims to keep these legacies alive for future generations as America writes its next chapter. This is a must-read for history buffs.
We want to remind everyone that you are invited to join the Village of Estero in saluting our local veterans, first responders and Gold Star parents from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Estero Community Park (see “Happenings” on page 14 for details). And check out this month’s Village Connection for highlights of projects included in Estero’s 2024-25 budget as the Village moves into its next chapter of development.
Also this month, we invite you to experience a meal at Oar & Iron, the newest scratch kitchen concept in Naples. Creating delicious food that is safe for every guest is this restaurant’s specialty. The menu allows everyone the ability to order something just the way they like it, even if they have gluten intolerance or other food allergies. Selecting our favorites was no easy task. Once you try Oar & Iron, you will understand. Oar & Iron is an easy drive from Estero, and their “next chapter” includes plans to expand the concept into Fort Myers.
So, what will your next chapter be? Whatever it is, I hope it adds richly to your personal story.
Until next time, remember to…
Enjoy the Good Life, Estero Life!!
