…”It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of”

How many of you remember this “feel good” song of the mid-’60s, written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach and first released by Jackie DeShannon? I certainly do! Singing the chorus at the top of our lungs at a Friday night sock-hop!

In this month of February, noted for the one universal day for love (Valentine’s Day), perhaps we should all stop, take a deep breath, and search our hearts for ways to put aside the hate, and look for the good in each other and in the world. Life is much too short, and we have so much here in paradise to be thankful for.

Lord, we have been given plenty, acknowledges the classic song, so now it’s our turn to give: “Love — not just for some, but for everyone.” It is through a spirit of love, compassion and concern that Estero Life Magazine is embracing two upcoming events in our area.

The first is “A Night of a Million Dreams,” a fundraising gala supporting the mission of Better Together, a local nonprofit which has helped hundreds of children in the last three years by helping to stabilize their families — keeping them out of foster care. Our cover story is dedicated to this event as a significant number of volunteers and host families live in Estero. This community partnership also works alongside many of the churches in our community. We hope that by sharing this story, you might find it in your heart to become involved.

The second event we continue to embrace is the Third Annual Secret Garden Gala supporting the Kids’ Minds Matter initiative to provide better mental health care for children, adding to the $10 million campaign recently announced by Lee Health Foundation. The beautiful outdoor space of Shangri-la Springs is the peaceful backdrop for an elegant garden evening. We promise this, too, will touch your hearts.

How about inviting someone you love to join you in the fastest growing pastime in our area (and maybe the nation)…Pickleball! As tennis court interest continues to wain, the popularity of this new game is taking its place. Chances are, your community may be in the process of converting some courts. Enjoy reading about this craze that is getting people up and moving!

Those of you who love learning will also enjoy reading about Estero’s newest school option. Last month, Estero Life highlighted the Estero Education Initiative, which is experiencing phenomenal success. This month, we would like to introduce you to the first foreign language immersion school in Estero. Athenian Academy is a specialized charter school which just finished its first semester and is poised to expand next school year.

Our wandering columnist, LJ Bury, also explores the theme of love by examining the concept of “date night” in today’s culture, asking the question, “Have you lost that Lovin’ Feeling?” — another great song of the ’60s!

Our wine columnist, Dinah Leach, offers her suggestions for wines to celebrate Valentine’s Day 2019. And Chef Daryll Hersche offers a recipe for Valentine’s, or anytime you want to cook up something special.

This month’s dining feature spotlights Sushi Tai Too in Bonita Springs. Travel and food writer Phill Morgan treated his sweetheart, Nancy, to this popular, local favorite featuring the best of Thai and Japanese cuisine.

We wish you and yours a very Happy Valentine’s Day! Loving and being loved is essential to us all – good for the mind, heart and soul. May love fill the air, not only this month, but throughout the year.

Until next month, remember…

Enjoy the Good Life: Estero Life
