My wife and I are residents at American House, a retirement community. American House is across the street to the immediate south of Lee Health, Coconut Point. Those of us that are ambulatory will have just a six minute walk to your facility. Many of us will be using your services including the beautifully landscaped grounds, lakes and walking paths. Welcome to the neighborhood….Don and Doris Lidke
I just love this article! No judgements is right! Take a chance, a risk – at any age! Why should the 20 somethings have all the fun! Fun article to read, thank you!
I truly enjoy reading your articles LJ. They give a person permission to be themselves and live life to the fullest! Plus…smiling and laughing are such good therapy.
I am a resident of Estero and absolutely love our city. I have always enjoyed the Estero magazine and look forward to reading it each time I see it in the mailbox. I just read the article on Pickleball and yes it is exploding and is a great recreational game for all ages. I am the owner of U.S. Tennis and Recreation in Estero and can tell you we are putting in Premier surfaces in Palmira, Audobon, and Loggerhead Cay with a cushion court that has a 17% force reduction on the body (great on the body for older people) and designed as a special surface for pickleball. If you ever want to do a follow up article about pickleball I would love to talk to you.
Great article Elaine is a wonderful activities director and brings us all together as one big family! We at Lighthouse Bay are so fortunate to have her! She makes sure there are endless activities to participate in and she has fun with us! We are Blessed! Thank you Elaine for everything you do!
I would like to vote for Karin Petrocelli. Although the other two moms are also very worthy, they could get the honor in the future to be mom of the year. Karin may only have this one chance now. She deserves the honor of being mom of the year.
Karin Petrocelli is the strongest woman I know. With everything she’s gone through she always finds time for husband and her girls. They are her number one goal in life.
Rachel, this is a fabulous article and one you highly deserve. You have boundless energy, a caring heart and no doubt you take life by the horns within every aspect of your lif. I am happy we met at the Arts for Act gala in November 2018, which supports families of domestic/sexual abuse and human trafficking. Heres wishing you continued success????????????
I know Kristi well. She’s a beautiful person inside and out. As genuine as anyone can be, and loves to serve and alway with a smile. I’m so proud of you.
So sad. Thank you for a great article that really tells the truth about the Grey athletes. Will be missed.
I have 2 retired Grey Athletes. Best dogs ever.
Thank You for a very well-written and fair article. I wish more positive articles came out before the election. What dismayed me is that the press in Florida NEVER gave the racing greyhound community a fair hearing, opting instead to side with activists from Grey2k, HSUS and others who continuously were there to bend their ears, while greyhound people took care of their dogs. The people of greyhound racing have come so far in making things right and gaining 98% adoption of retirees, (2% stay with their race owners). Many shelters don’t have near that 100% retirement plan that greyhounds now have. but the public never found that out. 4 million dollars of negative, misleading ads won out against truth. One photo was mine that was darkened and morphed into something sad. I asked for it to be removed as it was not true, and they wouldn’t. This posterdog of the “Protect Dogs” campaign was a happy greyhound begging for a cookie, and he was on a couch, retired, by the time the photo was swiped and published. Floridians will find out down the road that the writing on this amendment is designed to eliminate other forms of sporting breeds too, which is why a case against it is still in court. But by then it may be too late for the NGA greyhound, who is being bred less and less. It disheartens me to think the breed I love could become extinct. (AKC has different bloodlines). Whose breed will be next?
Thank you for a fair and truthful article. These beautiful athletes are so well cared for and loved by their trainers, owners and eventually adopters. It is absolutely tragic that families who have worked with greyhounds for 2, 3 sometimes 4 generations are having that ripped away from them and their lives upended. And the health and vigor of this breed will never be the same.
The article states ” it’ll be from places like Iowa, Arkansas, West Virginia and Texas.”
Texas has already permanently closed.
Arkansas has announced they are closing next year.
Iowa’s last year will undoubtedly be at the end of next year as they are losing their subsidies and a seasonal track cannot survive without Florida’s dogs.
West Virginia’s track is owned by Deleware North, and they have announced the closing of their others.
In about 1 year, at the most 2, greyhound racing will be entirely gone from the USA. A victim of themselves and legalized game rooms that no longer need to have racing dates to keep their rooms open.
It’s a complete disgrace w Watt people in Florida and you race tracks did to these greyhounds the owners the workers the farmers the ones that raised in took Kia with kids gloves love for these beautiful animals For The tracks to destroy a sport That’s been in Florida for 90 years it’s a sin . I hope the poker room goes broke I will never walk in a place where there was greyhound racing and it was stoped “Why” The tracks should be behind the greyhounds not throw them through the dirt remember greyhound racing it’s just like the sun in Florida it should be there every day
The ending of greyhound racing is an absolute travesty. Good-hearted but duped voters chose the misinformation, facts taken out of context, outright lies, sensationalized language, doctored and foreign photos that the animal rights activists (Grey2K and H$Y$) used in their slick $3 million smear camoaign.
And these same villainous groups have done absolutely nothing to help the very dogs or the people they’ve ruined. This ancient and magnificient, athletic breed will be all but gone in the United States within 10 years.
These dogs are and have been loved and cherished by the greyhound racing community. Florida got it wrong, so wrong.
Thank you for writing a heartfelt and unbiased article. It’s truly refreshing to see ethical journalism and storytelling. You painted a beautiful picture of “what was”. Florida and SW Florida particularly will miss the Greyhounds.
Thank you for this well written article expressing the tremendous loss to Florida as we near the close of the racing era, as well as the loss of the fabulous breed that has been overseen by the racing commission.
I believe in every word that this article says about Coach, Kevin VanDuser. I’ve known Kevin for over 30 years. He is a perfect , husband , father, Grandfather, brother, son-in-law, but mostly a Great friend!
I Pray for continuing showers of blessings upon his life and his family’s. He’s an amazing man of God and deserves nothing but the best! I am happy to know that he continues to do the things that he loves most, to be with his family, to Coach, and mostly to witness to anyone who comes in his path. He loves Jesus!!❤️
I thank Kevin and Jody and the rest of the family for allowing me to be a part of theirs. Love you both!
Coach V and his family are “the real deal”! I have never met a more loving family than the Van Dusers. My son was blessed to be one of Coach V’s “young champions”. May God continue to bless Coach V and his family.
I knew a little of his past work, but mostly I just knew I liked him and his son. Kevin (son) posted recently on how his dad kept his devotions each morning no matter how early he had to get up. That’s the coolest thing about him. 🙂 I’m glad I got to know them even for the short time we lived in FL.
I watched her tonight and was blown away….she was amazing, so talented, so mesmerizing, her voice soared like a bird.
I predict her the winner.
Fabulous voice!!!!!!
Doesn’t do well in interviews? What are you nuts? The kid is as great in interviews as she is when she sings. She’s got it all, the voice, the looks, the poise, absolutely everything. But is the current American Idol a big enough venue to push her to stardom. Six or seven million viewers an episode isn’t exactly the old Idol numbers. I think the Justin Bieber You tube route to stardom would be better than wasting her time on a show, like its competition the Voice, that isn’t capable of producing a star.
Amazing!!! Voted for her through the entire idol…she’s obviously the best but young so I think that may have played a factor. She really didn’t need to win to make it though. Here’s proof!!
My friend, that sense of humor just keeps going on and on and on. my favorite one is “seeing the man about a horse!“. These things make me realize how much I miss you. I’m sure I’ll get down there again one day.
Hugs, Janie

We became a regular customers of LAPA’S to the point that the staff already knows of favorites dishes and drinks. Every Time we return to our house satisfied and happy. You can’t go wrong with this restaurant. Period.
I would love the secret to their sweet potato, it is the best one I have had ever!! It has been abt 16 years since we were last down there, that was the most memorable dining of trip. The view is incredible and steaks & seafood were fabulous, but wow, that sweet potato, coated in salt & wrapped in foil, talk about it still…
When will the Rails-to-Trails bike path work be started? The railroad tracks thru Estero-isn’t that the area and is someone advocating for this and to connect into the wider trail system thru Florida? There is funding there in congress, it needs advocating. It would be good to have connection with all our bike/walking paths. Our community is terrible for bicycle safety, and yet we have the perfect weather for year-round cycling.
I think we’re all eager to see this. There is work going on behind the scenes, but nothing to announce yet. Stay tuned to Estero Life. We will have an update on the state of cycling in Estero soon!
Beautiful family, glad to see them in your magazine.
Laura J. C, thanks a lot for the article post.Much thanks again. Fantastic.

Guess when folks property taxes go up they might realize they got hoodwinked. Guess we’ll wait and see.

Excellent Article!
Really appreciate the information as an Estero resident. Please keep me informed of what is going on in Estero.
Are there plans to repave Corkscrew from Ben Hill to 41? It really needs it! The new part is great.
You may want to direct this question to the Village, but Corkscrew Road is under the jurisdiction of Lee County.
