Fun OUT of the Sun!
Somewhere between the beginning of hurricane season (June 1) and the peak of the season (mid to late September), we annually experience smoldering summer heat. But this year, it seems we have been at the height of summer heat since, oh, about the beginning of the year! While much of the country is experiencing near-record heat, we can be thankful that at least we have some relief from the ocean breezes.
This month we would like to offer a little distraction from the heat (and now the rains) with an issue full of FUN features!
Our cover story this month introduces us to Mama Gronk, the matriarch of one of the nation’s most stellar sports families – the Gronkowskis. This should be of special interest to local fans of the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Even if you don’t have five professional sports athletes in your own family, many of you will certainly identify with the logistical challenges of being a sports parent! Many readers may also identify with Mama Gronk’s choice to stay at home to raise her boys full-time. Her new book is a nod to the important work of stay-at-home parents everywhere.
This month’s other features explore growing recreational opportunities in the Village of Estero. Volunteers are busy cleaning up 10 acres of property newly acquired by the Village at the east end of Broadway, known as River Oaks Preserve. The Florida Native Plant Society has been contracted and is developing a plan for opening the land for recreational purposes. This will create many nature activities as well as native plant sales and education programs from local experts.
Are you a “Pickler”? Pickleball is America’s fastest growing sport! More than 13 communities and the Estero Recreation Center offer pickleball to our residents. And, with another recent Village of Estero purchase, there may be more courts coming at the former Gulf Coast Driving Range property on Williams Road. Surveys showed strong interest in this sport that is a smaller version of tennis.
Keeping the fun going, our dining feature this month takes us on an eclectic journey. The Bohemian, a new addition to downtown Bonita Springs, is a feast for the senses — stark white on the outside with a funky, vibrant décor on the inside — and a flavorful, varied menu to match! Fresh, locally sourced ingredients bring life to this global cuisine. A totally unique experience designed to be enjoyed with family or friends. Check out our favorites!
Finally, we have documented a few fun events that have happened around town lately in our Scene on Site photo galleries of the Greater Estero Chamber of Commerce annual awards luncheon and the Estero Historical Society’s reading of the Declaration of Independence.
Whether it’s a new food, new sport or new community group, I hope you try something FUN this month — and stay cool!
Until next time, don’t forget to…
Enjoy the Good Life: Estero Life!!
